1) Advantages of living in Southern Italy! FIRST ADVANTAGE: THE CLIMATE!

In southern Italy the climate is very favorable! It’s very different from Northern Italian. Seasons are well defined. We can fully enjoy the characteristics of each season and enjoy the sun when it comes.

Fall in Southern Italy

Fall is known as the rainy season. It’s cold, but nothing compared to winter. Even in fall we can go to the beach. Days tend to be shorter as it gets dark earlier. Fall is the time of coziness, the season of dry leaves that give a special color to each city. A spectacle of yellow, orange and red tones.

Winter in Southern Italy

Our winter is harsh, as in all of Europe. Between the months of December and February the temperature varies from 2°C to 14°C. But winter, like other seasons, has its charms. When it snows, it’s wonderful! The mountains are all white! The landscape is taken by this pale beauty. We can play in the snow, ski, have a hot chocolate with our family…

Spring in Southern Italy

In spring, we can walk in the parks, visit the coast, visit medieval towns, medieval villages. The climate is mild, winter is gone and the summer heat has not yet arrived. Cities are cheerful, flowery, colorful. Southern cities, which already have their charms, become indescribable!

Summer in Southern Italy

Summer is very hot and dry with strong sun all day long. It looks like we’re in a Tropical climate. Beautiful beaches, true aquatic paradises. The sea is crystal clear! Cities gain a lot of movement and joy. We can stroll outdoors with a lot of walking in beautiful places!

Golden Tip

  • And for those who don’t like the heat very much, they can stay in the mountainous region, which has a milder climate as well as a rich ecosystem and natural beauty.

2) Advantages of living in Southern Italy! SECOND ADVANTAGE: THE FOOD!

The quality of food produced in Southern Italy is a great advantage of living here. Our foods are genuine, purchased directly from the producers. Here people generally eat what they grow or buy from local producers. Fresh vegetables and fresh fish and seafood. Not to mention handmade “pasta”. Tasty, healthy and affordable products. Italians are world renowned for their traditions, cuisine and architecture. Italian wine is also recognized for its excellence. The South has cities that stand out in wine production. Very high-quality wines! Also read: Calabrian gastronomy: history, aromas and flavors!

The fruits…

There is a wide variety of fruits and vegetables which makes it possible to adapt family menus. Tourists can find many well-known foods and at the same time be amazed by the quality they have here. The peach, for example, is much bigger than normal! The apricot here is called albicocca.

The Pomodoro is our tomato. There are different types of tomatoes for each thing. Southern Italians have a tradition of making their own tomato sauce and this is done in large quantities and for pickling. The advantage of homemade preserves is the lower sodium content and the absence of preservatives and other artificial additives so common in industrialized preserves. Preserves extend the shelf life of foods and guarantee the presence of some foods even out of season. Eating in the South is eating WELL: HEALTHILY and ECONOMICALLY. 3) Advantages of living in Southern Italy! THIRD ADVANTAGE: THE COST OF LIVING AND THE HOUSING!

Housing is an important factor when deciding where to live. Here in the South, housing is not expensive. Leases are cheaper than in the North of the country. You can choose to live in more central cities or in small towns or medieval villages. In larger cities, the value for money is very attractive, as you will pay a little more, but you will have the advantage of having supermarkets, banks, schools close by. If you choose to live in a small town, a medieval village, for example, you don’t have to travel far to get to places. Click here and visit our section about the villages of Calabria!

Public transport

A differential in public transport in Italy is the fact that it does not have a collector or turnstile. Every Italian region has a company that manages the bus routes. These companies release a list of lines, with boarding points, twice a year. In it, you have the timetable, bus number and where it stops. You can find this guide for free at tobacconists and on company websites. Find out here: what to discover in Calabria using Public Transport?

In many small towns, private transport is unnecessary as historic centers are closed to traffic. But, nothing that a walk does not solve. Living in a small town has the advantage of doing almost everything on foot. By car, distances are short and traffic is practically non-existent. Visit our section Traveling by Car! Here we have posts about parking in Italy, fines, road signs and much more!

4) Advantages of living in Southern Italy! FOURTH ADVANTAGE: EDUCATION!

The education system is an important issue for those who intend to live in another country with minor children and even of university age. Education in Italy is characterized by its excellence. In southern cities, which are smaller cities, schools have a smaller number of students per class, around 20 students, which is very beneficial in terms of formation. Dialogue is facilitated between all members of the school community. One have access to local teachers, school and educational services.

Now let’s go into more details…

  • School menus tend to be healthier because they use organic foods and follow the local diet, that is, they consume more natural and less industrialized products.
  • For students who do not speak Italian there are teachers who are prepared to help them. Most schools have a bilingual section.
  • Public universities are also attractive for those who want to continue their academic studies. The University of Calabria is among the top ten universities in Italy.

5) Advantages of living in Southern Italy! FIFTH ADVANTAGE: THE FAMILY!

Last but not least! There is nothing better than living in a place where there is warmth, tranquility and quality of life. Italy is known, all over the world, as a country where people like to party, like to eat well, like to be with the family, get together to listen and tell “tales”. Italians like to be together, they like to cook together and this helps newcomers to socialize. In the South, these characteristics are quite remarkable.

A little more about the Italian family…

Culture, music, gastronomy are passed on to the younger generations, strengthening roots and maintaining traditions. Family ties are constantly reinforced at Sunday meetings, Pranzo di famiglia, lunch with Mamma. Then: “Antipasti, secondo, formaggio e frutta, dolce e liquore o caffè…” whoever is used to Italian cuisine will soon have a mouth watering!

“Italians worth their salt” like to welcome, to talk, to help and make friends. This welcoming environment is present in southern Italy. This cultural characteristic is perceived here: calling to eat, calling to talk and telling stories. Family is highly valued here. This family atmosphere helps to welcome in the family and also in the city where we chose to live.
