A little more about Calabria Corigliano

Whoever is traveling in Calabria cannot miss a stop at Calabria Corigliano, in the Ionian Cosentino. The origins of this city are very ancient, in fact, its foundation dates back to the Arab incursion, which occurred in 977. It stands majestically on a small hill surrounded by green olive groves and colorful orchards, a place where the Mediterranean region offers a mild climate throughout the year. This place is rich in art and history, a place of picturesque beauty full of charm and mystery, including an imposing Ducal Castle, a fortress built in 1073, recently restored to its former glory.  What Are The Ten Places You Must See In Calabria?

1) Corigliano and its Castle: VISIT THE CHURCH OF THE CARMINE AND CHURCH OS ST. ANTHONY

The main attraction that encourages you to visit Calabrian Corigliano is certainly its magnificent castle, but there are also other facilities that are worth a look; among them several churches whose main ones stand out, for example, the Church of the Carmine, with frescoes of the 500 on the facade. Or the Church of St. Anthony, with an adjacent Franciscan monastery; here is particularly noteworthy the dome covered with yellow and blue tiles and a beautiful bronze door created by the sculptor Carmine Cianci.

2) Corigliano and its Castle: VISIT OTHER CHURCHES

Ongoing with the Churches we must remember the Collegiate Church of St. Peter, where there are interesting paintings from the 18th century, and after the Church of the Reformation, the Church of Santa Clara, with the convent of the Poor Clares; in this Church is of particular interest the Organ, from 1735 and, finally, the most interest is known by one of the richest and oldest archives of the churches of the city, i.e. the Church of St. Francis of Paola, which contains paintings and possessed the valuable wooden chorus made in 1776, in addition to the San Francisco Hermitage, which is a small church that holds some frescoes from the 1600’s. All this and more you can see through the ancient city with its narrow streets, rural dwellings, which awaken charm and emotions so intense that it is impossible to escape, not to mention the archaeological and historical connection with the ancient, and ideal, Sibari.

3) Corigliano and its Castle: VISIT THE OLD TOWN AND THE CASTEL

And it is in the old town that you can discover the monuments, palaces and sights of the city. At this point, it is only right to devote the final part of the text to the main attraction of Corigliano, its magnificent Castle. As already mentioned, the castle, which was built in 1073 under Robert Guiscard, built this fortress to control the city and its people, is a must stop for tourists.

And here we go: to the castle!

The building is huge and has different parts to visit, including the prisons and the gigantic tower. The most interesting is the ‘noble floor’, that is, the rooms where the lords lived and which are painted and decorated with furniture from the past and where you can still breathe the atmosphere of the nineteenth century, made of brocade and pomp. Then there is the mirror room that owes its name to the presence of large mirrors on the walls.

Castle Attractions

The room is even more precious because of its Bohemian crystal chandeliers and ceiling painted with ‘trompe-l’oeil’ effects (artistic technique with perspective tricks to create an optical illusion). Another interesting room is the music room; from this room you can go to the lower floor where is the bathroom, equipped with sink, mirrors and a large marble bath. The tour continues with a visit to the Baron’s room, the Baroness and the Baron’s studio.

All rooms are decorated with original furniture; inside the mansion there is also a chapel dedicated to St. Augustine, built and held in the second half of 600. Inside you can admire some valuable paintings attributed to well-known artists. If you can devote a whole morning to discover this village, we also suggest a visit to Ancient Porta Librandi, along the way you can enjoy a splendid view over the Sibari plain. Also, a few kilometers away, there is the Marina of Corigliano (called Schiavonea), a tourist resort where you will be caressed by the warm summer sun, pampered by its clear and intense waters and entertained by its kind people who will welcome you; besides, knowing the traditions, is a way to spend a wonderful vacation in the healthiest pastime, without giving up any modern convenience.
