Our Introduction

Palmi is a coastal town in the northwestern part of the province of Reggio Calabria, on the Gulf of Gioia Tauro and on the coast of Viola. Close to the famous Mount Sant’Elia, the city offers incredible panoramic views. The coast of Palmi offers attractions such as Marina di Palmi and Tonnara Bay, sea caves and much more. This area has been inhabited since the Bronze and Iron Age, but the city, itself, appeared only in the 10th century and served as a refuge for those fleeing neighboring Taurean, a city that was razed by the Saracens.

The city was attacked and devastated in the 16th century by the privateer Dragut, but it was rebuilt by Carlo Spinelli. Since 1600, Palmi has experienced a progressive, rather slow growth, thanks to the development of the art of weaving and commerce. The city was destroyed several times by violent earthquakes; the last was in 1908, and the inhabited center was rebuilt in a project by Pucci, who developed a “modern” city, for its times, and very functional.

1) Discover the charming Palmi, in Calabria: FONTANA DELLA PALMA

Palmi is not a huge city, so you can see it in one day. The symbol of the city is the famous Fontana della Palma (“Fountain of the Palm tree”), which gets its name from the palm trees planted in various parts of the city. The fountain is monumental and is right in the center of Giovanni Amendola Square. The fountain was made in 1922 and is reproduced in a stamp of the series “Fontane d’Italia”.
