Are you traveling to Italy and do not know how to behave?

The first point to be mentioned is that the way you behave depends a lot on which part you are going to visit in Italy. I have lived in Italy for so many years and one of the biggest differences is the ‘warm reception’ between someone who lives in northern Italy and someone who lives in southern Italy.

In general, obviously, there are always exceptions, but in northern Italy people are more serious and old-fashioned. It will be much more complicated to make friends. I’m not saying they are not nice, but that cozy way will be harder to find. In southern Italy people are more like Brazilians:  you can feel yourself at home much easier. Going to the home of a Calabrian, Sicilian (or other southern regions) family, the feeling is that there will always having a party. That’s why I lived only 2 years in Rome and I have lived in Calabria for more than 11 years (I feel like I’m home here :)). Read also Enogastronomic Itinerary In Calabria

Asking for information…

I read on some blog that the Italians are rude; Sorry, but I do not agree with that comment! My experience has always been positive and I know so many people including my clients who have always told me the same thing, that people are super nice and helpful. Obviously, it can happen to be mistreated or that an Italian won’t reply you well, but this is an exception not a rule! Suddenly you asked something in a wrong way or that person has a problem, maybe bad mood, anyway, it may happen to anyone, right?

Always remember to give a ‘buon giorno’ (good morning) or ‘buona sera’ (good afternoon or good night -when you’re leaving) when entering the places, remember to use ‘grazie’ (thank you) that will be answered with a ‘prego’ (you’re welcome); when you need help, say ‘scusi’ (excuse me), ‘per favore, puoi aiutarmi?’ (Please, can you help me?), ‘non parlo italiano’ (I do not speak Italian) and always with a smile on your face! I doubt that person will be rude to you; anyway, there are rules that generally apply to any country we are visiting.

Tips! Should I give tips or not?

Tipping is not mandatory in Italy, but taxi or private taxi drivers, waiters, hotel concierges and tour guides, when they do a great job and treat you with politeness, always wait for the tip; generally the ideal value is based from 10% to 15% of the total service amount. (obviously, according to your satisfaction).

It has happened several times of workers as “drivers”, after doing a great service did not receive a tip and feel bad and devalued, because they felt that the customers had not been pleased with their work, do you understand why it is important to tip who’s working? Is a way to recognize and value people’s work (obviously when they deserve it)! Feel free and comfortable to not give a tip if you don’t want to, since they have already been paid for the service anyway!

Dressing Code in Italy

A very important thing: Italians are very aware of how to dress, so is better to avoid wearing very flashy clothes, such as shirts with necklines, miniskirts or mini shorts. A woman dressed in a very flashy way can call herself some ‘problems’; as you know, Italians have the worldwide fame to love flirting (and a little male chauvinist!), so if you want to avoid these types of problems, dress yourself in a more discreet way.

The question of clothing is also valid for visiting some places. In most churches is forbidden the entrance if you’re wearing short clothes or with exaggerated necklines. Many years ago, when I went to visit the Basilica Saint Peter, I faced a huge line and when I was about to enter, they would not let me pass… why? I was wearing a mini skirt! So, remember that!
