3) How about getting to know Aiello Calabro? VISIT THE CHURCHES

Aiello’s historic buildings are also noteworthy, among them, of course, the splendid churches. The most important of all is the Mother Church dedicated to Santa Maria Maggiore. Located in Santa Maria Square, the church was founded before the year 1000, but some historians say that it may only have been founded in 1321 and was elected Mother Church only in 1417. Inside the church, the Baroque-style altar catches our attention, made entirely of polychrome marble.

Other churches in the city that deserve mention are: the Church of San Giuliano, from the 15th century and named after the Square where it is located; the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie (St Mary of Graces), of great architectural interest; and the Church of Saints Cosmas and Damian. Unmissable and impossible not to mention is the famous Cybo chapel, from the former Convent of Observants, dating back to 1597, a real gem and extraordinary testimony of the Calabrian Renaissance.

Aiello and a little of his history…

Aiello has been, over the centuries, at the center of several battles for the power of his territory. The Saracens of neighboring Amantea were persuaded to give up taking over the city by the ingenious inhabitants of Aiello, the Aiellesi who, to prove they had sufficient supplies, would have thrown some cheese pizzas from the castle walls. In 1065, the Normans were led by Roberto il Guiscardo and, for four months, they tried to dominate the city, but without any success. Read also Are you of Calabrian descendant?

Historical events

The importance of this small town is documented through the alternating historical events that happened here with different peoples, among which the Aragonese, the Ayelles fief, the Sersales – which was attributed to the viceroy of Calabria – and the Count of Ajello, Francesco Siscar. It was a very prosperous period for Aiello and, at this time, there was a considerable expansion of territory and demographic, social and economic terms, especially through silk production and local agriculture.

In 1566

In the year 1566, the Aiellese fief was bought for no less than 38,000 ducats by the Prince of Massa, Alberico Cybo Malaspina. The Cybo family came from Tuscany and Liguria and maintained ownership of the manor until the subversion of feudalism, which became a duchy in 1605, when the State of Aiello emerged.

Several of Aiello’s architectural testimonies are even due to this period of historical abundance. One of the best examples we can mention is the Cybo palace and the homonymous noble chapel.

The city’s castle

Obviously, it is impossible to talk about this historic moment without mentioning the city’s castle, which was one of the first fortresses in the kingdom and, not by chance, was chosen to be the residence of Francesco Cybo.

Here, Francesco has organized a splendid library with very rare literary works! In the decade of French domination, Aiello became part of the jurisdiction of Belmonte, to pass to the government of Rogliano until the year 1811, when it then became the capital of the district that also included Terrati, Serra, Lago, Laghitello, Pietramala and Savuto. Shortly after this period came the Bourbon Restoration, and shortly thereafter, Garibaldi united Italy.

In 1905

The violent earthquake of 1905 practically destroyed the city, which had been named Aiello di Calabria in 1864. The city only received its current name, Aiello Calabro, in 1928; that same year it incorporated Cleto e Serra into its territory, but in 1934, Cleto, and in 1937, Serra, the cities became independent.

The Casellone Grove

Between the sea and the mountain, Aiello offers tourists beautiful panoramas, history and architecture that leave them stunned. Despite the simplicity of everything, the elegance and beauty of this place does not leave anyone indifferent to it. Its Casellone Grove, which presents itself with its kiosks equipped for those seeking total immersion in nature, makes this place even more special and full of peace and tranquility.

Despite being a small town, little known by the large tourist mass and resting in a privileged position, Aiello knows how to conquer those who set foot in this unique, enchanting, passionate and almost poetic territory!
