How to get from the airport to downtown?

There are no direct international flights to Lamezia Terme, Cosenza or Reggio Calabria; therefore the flight will stopover in Rome or Milan. Lamezia Terme Airport is Lamezia Terme Sant’Eufemia Airport and is one of the most important in southern Italy, mainly in the Calabria region. It has good infrastructure, good options for exits to nearby cities – both by car and train – and is well organized. The airport is located 10 km from Lamezia downtown (*); from the center of Cosenza about 65 km and from Reggio Calabria the distance is 110 km. Despite the ‘scary’ distances between Lamezia and Cosenza and Lamezia and Reggio, there are some good transport options, although not all are so comfortable.

(*) From the old town; the so-called ‘downtown’, where the Lamezia Central Train Station is located; it is next to the airport, about 5 minutes by car and / or public transport, 2 km.

1) How to get from Lamezia Terme airport to downtown of Lamezia, Cosenza and Reggio Calabria? BY BUS

To Lamezia: with the executive bus from the airport to the central station, the journey takes about 5 minutes. The ticket costs around EUR 1.50 and to check schedules, you can access the official website of the responsible company by clicking here.

To Cosenza: it is possible to use the bus that leaves directly from the airport of Lamezia Terme. The service costs EUR 20.00 and it is necessary to make a reservation in advance. To do so, just click here!

To Reggio Calabria: It is possible to check the available lines by accessing this website. The prices vary between 10 and 15 euros and the trip can take up to 2 hours. I already say that it is a very tiring trip, but if you want to save money and are not in a hurry, it is an option.

2) How to get from Lamezia Terme airport to downtown of Lamezia, Cosenza and Reggio Calabria? BY CAR

To Lamezia Terme: Airport is 10 kilometers away from the old town. A great option is to use the SS09 towards Nicastro Station, where there are clear directions to downtown. The exits and roads to the city center are very well signposted, but having a GPS never hurts. The drive takes about 20 minutes, depending on traffic and time range.

To Cosenza: The most suitable road is the E45. There are well-signposted exits to Cosenza, and the travel time can vary between 1 and 1h30, depending on traffic.

To Reggio Calabria: use the E45 road. The road is well maintained and well signposted, but, once again, using a GPS never hurts. The trip can take between 1h30 and 2h00, it also depends on traffic.

TIP: in summer, in high season, avoid rush hours! The roads are super crowded and travel times can even double due to the intense traffic of vehicles.

3) How to get from Lamezia Terme airport to downtown of Lamezia, Cosenza and Reggio Calabria? BY TRAIN

To Lamezia Terme: Taking the train at the central station, and heading towards Nicastro station, the trip takes about 10 minutes (without stops) and the ticket costs EUR 1.20. It is very worthwhile and very safe. It may not be very comfortable when you have luggage, but if you choose less busy times it can be a great and economic option!

To Cosenza: there are trains that leave from Lamezia to Cosenza and the trip can take up to 2h40! The ticket can cost up to EUR 10.00

To Reggio Calabria: leaving the central station of Lamezia, proceed to Crotone station and, from Crotone, proceed to Reggio Calabria Centrale Station. The trip can take up to 3 hours and costs EUR 24.00 – depending on the time of year.

  • The tickets prices are subject to variation without any notice.

Tip

  • Do not forget that you will be carrying luggage, so avoid carrying large and heavy volumes and avoid traveling during rush hours.

4) How to get from Lamezia Terme airport to downtown of Lamezia, Cosenza and Reggio Calabria? BY CAB

There are several taxi companies that operate the route to downtown. As with car trips, routes can take between 1h30 and 2h00, depending on traffic. It is expensive, so I would disregard this option, but if you have no options, go for it!

  • NEVER take a clandestine taxi, ANYWHERE in Italy, IT IS NOT SAFE, ok?! Before getting into the car, check that the taxi is registered to avoid unpleasant surprises.

5) How to get from Lamezia Terme airport to downtown of Lamezia, Cosenza and Reggio Calabria? BY PRIVATE TRANSFER

The best option for those who arrive at Lamezia Airport and want to go to Cosenza or Reggio Calabria is the private transfer service; it costs around:

  • Lamezia airport to Reggio Calabria down town 280 €
  • Reggio Calabria to Tropea 250 €
  • Tropea to Lamezia airport 5 am 100 €

It is super safe and comfortable, especially for those who don’t want to worry about parking, bus and train schedules and for those who don’t want to worry about carrying luggage. A Little about Lamezia Terme

Lamezia Terme is a relatively new city; it was founded in 1968 with the unification of three municipalities: Nicastro, Sambiase and Sant’Eufemia Lamezia. The name of the city, Lamezia Terme, has one of the oldest sides of the political community in the historic territory, Lametìnoi, which settled near the Lametos River. Terme (Thermos) comes from the peculiar presence of thermal waters in the town of Caronte. Striking in the region is the harmonization of the sea and the mountain, which has a typical Mediterranean climate.

Lamezia Terme is the third largest city in the Calabria region and has an important economic role for the entire region. The main products of Lamezia Terme are olives and grapes. Another important point to mention are the sweets: typical of the entire region are cuzzupe, desserts typical of the Easter period and turdiddi.

Lamezia Terme is FULL of churches and fantastic buildings. It is not one of the city most sought after by tourists, unfortunately, since there is so much to offer, enchant and make your experience unforgettable. If you are in doubt about whether or not to include this little gem in your itinerary, don’t think twice: include it! It’s really worth it! Furthermore, it is possible to visit several other cities using Lamezia Terme as the base city: the train stations make it easy and comfortable to travel to other Italian cities!

A Little about Cosenza

Cosenza is another little Calabrian jewel that deserves a visit. Known as the city of the Bruzi, ancient people who inhabited Calabria, Cosenza is the kind of city that invites us to want to spend the rest of our life there!
