The History about Oriolo

It was born as a fortress to defend the citizens who escaped from the coast to take refuge from the continuous incursions of the Saracens. Leaning on a cliff, about 500 meters high, it has a magnificent intact medieval village, with beautiful frontages of palaces on the main road, which leads to the Aragonese castle. It was a feud of Sanseverino of Salerno at the beginning and then, in the 16th century, it passed to Carretto. Oriolo is an excellent location for hiking in the surrounding valleys, such as the Sarmento Valley, the Sinni Valley and the Pollino mountain range with the Raganello Gorge, Monte Pollino and Carretto’s Alexandria.

In its history Oriolo has been a land of disembarkation, transit and conquest, from which it inherited a cultural polyphony that can be seen in the great gastronomic, artistic, historical and cultural heritage. The origins of the place are much older; Oriolo was one of the twenty-five cities that the mighty Sybaris kingdom had under its power, at the height of its splendor. With the fall of Sybaris, Oriolo suffered a long period of decline until the Mille grown, when it once again played a role as a stronghold against the Saracen incursions. Oriolo has an urban layout from the 17th century: the palaces overlooking the main road crosses the whole village and connects to the residence of the feudal lord, with the walls of the 15th century, today, reduced to ruins.

1) Let’s know Oriolo in Calabria? VISIT THE CASTLE OF ORIOLO AND THE MOTHER CHURCH

The monumental symbol par excellence of the village of Oriolo is the Castle, which is located in the highest part of the old city and served as a refuge, until the 17th century, for coastal populations terrorized by pirates. The castle of Oriolo was built in the Norman period, most likely around 1.050, and is characterized, initially, by its angular cylindrical towers and then reworked with elements from Anjou and Aragon periods. The fortress became the symbol of the city itself, as well as the emblem, and recovered the unity of a typical small fishing town in the Upper Ionian of Cosentino. Inside, there is a museum with interactive classrooms, lectures and multimedia rooms, as well as a conference area.

The Mother Church dedicated to Saint George

In front of the castle is the Mother Church dedicated to Saint George, of Norman origin, as revealed by the two lions that serve as ‘guards’ and dates back to the year 1.264. Inside, the wooden statue of Our Lady with Jesus, from 1500, and the wooden altar of the monumental baroque are treasured. The Church is inserted in the urban structure of the old city and, together with the medieval castle, is listed among the national monuments of the Ministry of Culture. Interesting is the Giannettasio Palace, from 1.700, the seat of the house of cultures and the Museum of civilization.

2) Let’s know Oriolo in Calabria? VISIT THE HISTORIC CENTER

Typical, homogeneous and secluded is how the historic center of Oriolo presents itself, really particular, the good thing is the liveliness of the place, thanks to the presence of different dining facilities, well signposted. Among other things, this village is situated in a spectacular landscape and represents the value and variety of historical and cultural attractions.

The ‘Sunacchiari’

We must mention one of the strongest traditions of Oriolo, in other words, the presence of the ‘sunacchiari’, (bagpipes players) who constantly follow the statue of the Saint, during the procession, spreading songs that recall the past and the mountains covered with snow.

The Procession

The procession, which passes through the streets of the old town, is announced by a 19th century Guard and is opened by the ‘Palio player.’ After the walk, I advise you to have refreshment at one of the many restaurants, which are also well signposted, and enjoy the local cuisine, which takes its essence from popular tradition and peasant society. Made mainly by ‘grass-based’ pasta dishes, such as gnocchi (rashkatìll, in the local language) or a type of ‘long fusilli’ (firzùw) and fettuccine, of varying width (uaganèll and tagliuuin).
