A little more about Fuscaldo…

Fuscaldo is a very charming little town, 350 meters above sea level! Its origins are not known exactly, but it is probably of Lombard origin. Its name derives from Fons Calidus, which means “hot water source”, present in the area – the origin of the city dates from the 12th century. Read also Tourism in Calabria!

1) Let’s visit Fuscaldo  in Calabria? ITS HISTORY

What we see today of Fuscaldo, began to be populated since ancient times. Probably the hill where the historic center is located has served as a point of reference for the population since the Greek-Gothic war (535-553). During the rule of Lombardy, between the 6th and 9th centuries, the summit of the Fuscaldo hill was a refuge, ideal for observing the Vardaro valley, a stream that flows north of the city and which was one of the main routes of communication between Fuscaldo and other locations. Between the coast and the interior, it is said to have been used, at least, since the Roman era.

Fuscaldo’s territory was a Byzantine domain and, therefore, very subject to Saracen attacks. In 1110, Sica and Umfredo di Bohon, wife and son of the late Roberto, the first aristocrat from whom we have news, are mentioned for the first time. Later, many feudal lords ruled Fuscaldo and, in 1496, the Spinelli dynasty began, which lasted, almost continuously, until the subversion of feudalism, around 1806. With administrative order, in 1816, Fuscaldo was elevated to the capital of the mandate. Also read: WHAT ARE THE TEN MUST-SEE PLACES IN CALABRIA?

2) Let’s visit Fuscaldo  in Calabria? CITY ATTRACTIONS

The city is not large and it is very quiet! In one day, it is possible to get to know all of Fuscaldo and be enchanted by its very peculiar places.

Fuscaldo Marina (beach) and the Mother Church

We arrive at the Marina di Fuscaldo station. Here it is possible to have access to the beach, which is a spectacle of nature. Be sure to see the Mother Church. There are no records about its foundation, but it is known that it already existed in 1166. We know this because, on June 5th of that year, Riccardo, archbishop of Cosenza, consecrated his high altar in honor of San Giacomo Maggiore (St James the Greater) and placed it there relics of the martyrs. The “proof” of its former existence is attested by a walled plaque on the wall opposite the right nave, next to the sacristy door. Another concrete fact is that the Church was founded by the University of Fuscaldo, which took care of the place until 1749.

Initially, the church was Gothic in shape and contained several private chapels. However, due to the size of the place, some of them never had their own altar, which is why the owners limited themselves to having the saints painted on the walls of the corridors and to administer and pay the rent established for the celebration of the masses. There are frescoes and paintings that adorn the chapels, which were made by master Genesio Gualtieri da Mormanno and by G. Battista Santoro. In 1984, a master carpenter, Francesco, nicknamed Ciccio, Trifilio designed and built a beautiful altar and pulpit!

Fuscaldo Castle

Fuscaldo Castle is another must-see attraction and, although there is little left of it, it draws our attention. Fuscaldo Castle is placed on a buttress of Serra Pantalonata, between the valleys of the Maddalena and Mercando torrents, and dates from the 12th century. Conflicts with Tarsia, Ruffo, Marzano and, finally, Spinelli from 1496 to 1806, modified it and destroyed it little by little. The latter was a Catholic family that supported the Holy Inquisition and was the last family to make changes to the castle. Although it was imposing, little was left, but the castle – still – is the guardian of the story of the tragic fate of the Waldensians, who fled the persecution for Piedmont. So many others who took refuge in Calabria, worked on the lands of Marquis Spinelli; there they were declared heretics and were subjected to a first trial at Fuscaldo Castle. Today, it is possible to see only a small part of the castle walls, but that is enough to make our imaginations travel!

Church of the Immaculate Conception

The Church of the Immaculate Conception also draws our attention: it is one of the most beautiful churches on the Riviera dei Cedri and has a façade and portal made of sandstone, dating from 1633. It also houses a baroque bell tower of incredible beauty. Inside, there are statues and paintings from the 1700s, and a retable by the artist G. Pascaletti.

San Giuseppe Church

The Church of San Giuseppe is also a very charming church. It is located on via Garibaldi and probably dates back to the 1700s, but was previously used as a cemetery. The main altar is dedicated to Our Lady of Suffrage and features a Pascaletti canvas. The church was formerly called “Anime del Purgatorio”, – souls in purgatory -, precisely because it was a cemetery previously.
