At the top of a hill, it is possible to see the Praia castle, which has been well preserved over time and which houses important chapters in the city’s history. Called Rocca di Praia, the castle was built in the Norman period, around the 14th century.

In addition to the structural majesty, the castle’s location is privileged: at its foot, you can see the Thyrrenian Sea, the largest Italian sea. Today, the place is hosted by a B&B.

The Shrine of the Madonna della Grotta is located inside a natural cave that originated inside the hill – which is why it gets its name (“St Mary of the Cave”) – and it is quite easy to access, once you face the real obstacle: 53 steps, made of marine pebbles. .

When to visit Praia a Mare?

The city offers warm weather in summer and balanced weather in winter. If you want to go in the hottest month, prefer to schedule your trip for August – if you prefer the opposite, the coldest month is January, when the thermometers reach an average temperature of 11 degrees.

For those who are a fan of a really balanced climate, choose spring (April, May or June) or the end of summer, between September and October.
