Our Introduction

Also called “Rossana, the Byzantine” – Rossana is a center of Roman origin situated on a hill to the extreme plunging of Sila Greca. Rossano was one of the Byzantine centers of Calabria, point of reference for groups of Greek origin and for the numerous Sicilian exiles, dodged by the Arab occupation.

The city presents itself as a picturesque cluster of houses on a mountainous height all covered with beautiful olive groves. The religious performance that Rossano had, in the ninth and ninth centuries, is confirmed by the presence of Basilian monasteries and numerous churches and monastic cells in the deep Walloons below. Rossano, thus, is defined as the most Byzantine city of Calabria and Italy, noted, for this reason, as ‘Rossano, the Byzantine’. With the presence of religious, initially formed in the caves excavated on the Scottish sides of the rocky shore, the small dwelling was transformed into one of the main Byzantine centers of the region, Rossano; already administrative district capital, is an old seat of archbishopric (dating back to the century XI, before the Norman age), has notorious monuments and there is a characteristic center in the Square with a communal tower.

1) What to see in Rossano Calabro? VISIT THE OLD TOWN

There are so many monuments that deserve a highlight; certainly a must see is its old town, called San Bernardino. In order to reach it, one can walk through the Garibaldi Course, characterized by a series of enlargements and Squares overlooking the residences of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries of noble or rich families. At the beginning of the course there is the small Vitoria Square, characterized by a monument in pieces, by Francesco Jerace, and soon after we find the Steri Square, on which stands the high civic tower. From here it rises to the church of San Bernardino of origin in the XIV century. Inside the church we can find works in carved wood of the XVII century, among which a Crucifix perhaps by Umile di Petralìa.

2) What to see in Rossano Calabro? VISIT THE CATHEDRAL

From Steri Square, at the foot of the tower, a path descends in curves to the Cathedral of ancient origin and redone in 1330 by orders of Roberto D’Angiò. While maintaining the gothic-Anjou basilica construction, there is a built-in aspect because it has undergone numerous restructurings: the lined roof in the central nave is from XV, while those of the carved and gilded side aisles dates from the eighteenth century. There is also a Byzantine painting dating back to the 9th century, which represents Madonna dell’Achiropita, appeared according to tradition, by miracle, on the wall of the church under construction, after which the name was attributed to the Cathedral.

3) What to see in Rossano Calabro? VISIT THE PALACE OF THE ARCHBISHOPRIC

In the palace of the archbishopric, near the Cathedral, the prepared the Diocesan Museum of Rossano, which hosts furniture, objects and works of sacred art from the treasury of the Cathedral and other churches of the Diocese of Rossano, but the most famous and famous work is the Codex Purpureus Rossanensis, which arrived at the Diocesan Museum in the VI or X century, followed by Greek monks.

The ‘Codex Purpureus Rossanensis’ is a 188-page Byzantine gospel illustrated by splendid polychrome miniatures; is one of the oldest and most precious Byzantine gospels, dating back to the fifth century. The document contains Greek writings with characters in gold and silver and fifteen miniatures depicting the life of Christ, with the Gospels of Matthew and Mark written with elegant gold and silver uncial characters on fine, purple parchment of about 30×20 cm. Codex Purpureus Rossanensis is on the list of applications to be recognized by UNESCO among the excellent assets of world artistic heritage.

4) What to see in Rossano Calabro? VISIT THE BASILICA ABBEY OF SANTA MARIA DEL PATIRE

A private visit is reserved for the old basilica abbey of Santa Maria del Patire, also called Patirion. It rises above a Sila Greca seafloor, at the beginning of the eleventh century, more than 600 meters above sea level, in perfect mystical solitude as a monastic complex of the Basilica. Of the monastery remains only a few ruins, while the church is well preserved. In addition to that place of worship, the monastery was an important center in which unmistakable scribes and miniaturists of sacred texts worked. It was the same Virgin who wanted the abbey to be placed there when she appeared to Saint Bartolomew of Simari, who soon after the Mille led a hermitage among those mountains and asked to erect a monastery dedicated to her.

St. Bartholomew obeyed and joyfully engaged in the construction under the lit guide of the Holy Mother, who from the beginning intended that this was a place exclusively of prayer and recollection. Also worth a visit is the church of Panhaghìa, a small Byzantine building hidden in a cluster of old houses descending behind the Cathedral and on the edge of a cliff to the south-eastern; there is also the church of St. Mark the Evangelist, one of the Byzantine buildings most interesting of all of Calabria.

The Terrace

From the terrace there is a beautiful view of the turret of the Celati: on the rock walls there are the entrances to numerous caves, a long temple of hermit monks. In Rossano, besides the numerous palaces moved by the country and privatized, you can also visit its old town where you can see many old works that goes back in time, in particular to the Greek colonizers.

It is possible to reach the railway station of Rossano from the northern Adriatic dorsale (Milan – Bari – Taranto) via Bari; from the northern Tyrrhenian dorsale (Genoa-Salerno) via Paola; from the Ionian dorsale (Reggio Calabria – Rome) via Catanzaro Lido; from the south, Tyrrhenian dorsal (Reggio Calabria – Rome) via Paola.
