A little more about Scalea

Anyone who comes to Calabria cannot help but dive into the cobalt blue sea that surrounds this place. For this, we will discover a city that is located on the Tyrrhenian coast, on a stretch of golden beach called the Cedars Riviera (Riviera dei Cedri, in Italian) and that maintains, within the ascents to the historical center, the evidence of the distant peoples that have made here their stronghold: we are speaking of Scalea. The city is in the charming Cedars Riviera in a privileged location and is in the beautiful gulf of Policastro; this small village is one of the oldest towns that make up the province of Cosenza, ideal for those looking for a quiet place to spend vacations with sun and sea, but without losing the opportunities to have fun. What Are The Ten Places You Must See In Calabria?

Scalea was one of the most sought after destinations by the Romans who had, literally, fallen in love with this land, being named as one of their favorite vacations destinations. And it is thanks to the Romans that today it is possible to admire the remains of ancient patrician palaces which then inspired the construction of the much more famous buildings in Pompeii and Herculaneum, which were later destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius. What to see in Scalea besides the sea?

Scalea is, therefore, a city to discover. And it is through the narrow and winding streets that characterize the old town of Scalea that we have the revelation of the heart of this remarkable site, it is here, in fact, where we find the main monuments of the country, from the main church to the Palace of the Princes, through the remains of the famous and, at that time, majestic, Norman Castle. There are numerous attractions to see in the old town and in their villages. Must-see in this walk through the streets of Scalea is the Talao Tower, undisputed symbol of the city itself. The tower was built by Charles V in the sixteenth century and, together with the towers that are present along the Tyrrhenian coast, was an alert system to combat the Turkish invasion.

Church of Santa Maria de Episcopio, Church of San Nicola in Plateis, Chapel of San Cataldo and Ruins of Grancia

The rock in which it is was once an island whose caves have been inhabited since prehistoric times. The tower is located in the town of Torre Talao, a few meters from the sea. Once the ‘rock’ in which it is found was completely surrounded by water, it became a real island. Scalea is also known for its beautiful churches, among which we recommend the Church of Santa Maria de Episcopio, dating from the seventeenth century, the Church of San Nicola in Plateis, is at the entrance of the Chapel of San Cataldo and, finally, the ruins of Grancia and the Franciscan Monastery, dating back to the 13th century. A deeper visit should be in the Church of San Nicola in Plateis, located at the bottom of the old town, and that has an imposing structure as well as the other church, dedicated to the same Saint.

The entrance of the crypt is the tomb of the philosopher Gregorio Caloprese. The access to the medieval village has four doors; one of the most important is the Port of Marina, in Padre Pio Square, where you can visit the home of the same philosopher Gregorio Caloprese. After walking in the streets and alleys of the old town, you will reach the Church of Santa Maria d’Episcopio, almost completely rebuilt in the seventeenth century. Here is held the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel, who is the matron saint of Scalea. Near the church, there are the ruins of what was the Episcopal Palace.

The Norman Castle

The old part of Scalea is also rich in 11th century ruins, which belonged to the Norman Castle, which is located at the top of the medieval village. It was there that Admiral Ruggero de Lauria was born, also mentioned by Boccaccio in his Decameron. The castle was the residence of several leaders, but was eventually abandoned and, to date, are not only the ruins of the central main tower, ramparts and the famous shape of the cylindrical towers of Aragonese origins. Last, but not least, we suggest you also visit the old cylinder-shaped tower of Cimalonga, the Aragonese style completes the tower, dating from the fifteenth century, especially since it dominates the whole city from the high place where it rises. Today it houses the Antiquarium, the archaeological museum that keeps the findings of the archaeological park near Laos. In Scalea you can admire the many beaches characterized by a sea of crystal clear waters, where sports lovers can enjoy diving, swimming, jumping and other water sports.
