The Calabria sea is impressive and cities like Pizzo and Tropea, are where ‘mass’ tourism is concentrated, all because these places have tourist structures by the sea full of charm, white sand and a movielike sea! Pietragrande beach is a jewel with its cliffs and is also a destination for Italians.

Heading south, we find Scilla, a city full of mystery and folklores! Another wonderful beach is Praia a Mare, which received the ‘Green Flag’, which certifies the place as ideal for families with children. If you’re looking for all Italian luxury, head to Copanello, which is the center of the region’s elegance. In Amantea, bathed by the Tyrrhenian Sea, it is where most of the historical and cultural points are located, such as, for example, the Palazzo delle Clarisse and the five churches of the city.

One of the most beautiful is the Polino National Park, which is also the largest one in Italy. The park extends to Cosenza and its vegetation is mostly dominated by the famous black pines. The park is ideal during the summer or winter, being quite democratic for all tastes and featuring the most varied outdoor activities.

Another amazing park is the Aspromonte National Park, which is famous for its olive and citrus trees. Guaranteed fun is also spending the day in Sila, which passes through Catanzaro and is where the namesake park, Sila National Park, is located. The prominent vegetation here is pine trees that dominate the woods and trails.

3) Ten reasons to visit Calabria? THE CALABRESE VILLAGES

Ten Reasons to go to Calabria?Calabria is home to the most beautiful villages in Italy! Places like Fiumefreddo, Altomonte, Scilla, Gerace and Morano Calabro are on the list of the most beautiful towns in Europe. To give you an idea, from the official list of the ‘Club of the Most Beautiful Burgos (Villages) in Italy’ which is composed of 217 Burgos across the country, 19 of them are in Calabria. The list aims to enhance tourism in these cities and enhance local culture.

4) Ten reasons to visit Calabria? MUSEUMS AND ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES

Ten Reasons to go to Calabria?Among the countless museums present in Calabria, one of the most famous is the National Museum of Reggio Calabria, where the indefectible Bronzes of Riace are located: statues of two Greek warriors recovered in the Riace Sea in 1972; the Bronzes are considered the 12th Wonder of the world!

Another must-see museum is Locri Epizefiri, which is located within an archaeological site and is dedicated to Zeus. The Raffaele Corso Ethnographic Museum, in Palmi, is also worth a visit and is part of the House of Culture, where other exhibition spaces are located. We also have the National Archaeological Museum of Crotone, which houses beautiful collections from all over the region and also from the ancient city of Kroton. Another famous and interesting site is the Grotta Del Romito (Romito’s Cave), which is one of the most famous archaeological sites in Europe. In Papasidero, the Grotto is famous for its priceless cultural value and is VERY worth a visit!

5) Ten reasons to visit Calabria? MAGNA GREECE

Ten Reasons to go to Calabria? The remains of Magna Greece are still visible in Calabria today. Its greater concentration of archaeological sites of that period is spread in several Calabria cities such as, for example, Kaulon and Casamatta. In Casamatta is one of the most recent points discovered (a few years ago) and features a beautiful mosaic with dragons, dolphins and floral motifs.

Calabria was colonized by the Greeks in the 8th century B.C. And later it was one of the most important cities of the Byzantine Empire. After a long period it was dominated by the Normans, Swabian, Anjou’s and Aragonese, that means: it is an impressive mixture of history, peoples and culture! Some of the most important cities in Calabria that made up Magna Greece were: Reggio Calabria, Locri, Crotone, Sibari, Palmi and Lamezia Terme.

6) Ten reasons to visit Calabria? THE ORIGIN OF THE NAME ITALY WAS IN CALABRIA

It was in Calabria that the country of form of a boot got its name! There are several theories about the name Italy and some of the best known are: the name derives from Italoi, which means ‘inhabitants of the mountains’; another theory says that the ancient Greeks called the region ‘vituli’, which was called that way for the worship of that people by ‘vitelli’, calves in Italian, and ‘vitulli’ the name became Itali and, finally, Italy.

Another theory says that the name Italy comes from Ancient Rome: they say that the Romans called the south of the country Italic, which means ‘land of oxen’ and, over time, the name became Italy. In other words: Italy is a name of Greek origin that, until today, means calf. Before being the name of the country, the name Italy designated only the region of Calabria; the name Calabria is derived from the Greek Kalon-Brion, and means ‘land that makes good arise’, ‘abundant land in goods’ and refers to the region’s fertility. The actual meaning of the word Calabria is ‘land of rocky areas’, therefore: Calabres are ‘inhabitants of rocky lands’.
