Lets go to know our Calabria?
Let’s meet Calabria?
Calabria, located at the bottom of the boot, is a region of the Italian peninsula surrounded by two rich seas in history: the Tyrrhenian Sea and Ionian Sea; Despite its more than 800 kilometers of coastline, it is a land of farmers and not sailors. Calabria has three mountains in the middle of the Mediterranean: Pollino, Scilla and Aspromonte that, together, form a green lush forest, rich in water springs, lakes and aromatic plants. Precisely between these mountains and their hills, there are the most precious treasures of this region, still unknown by many because, over many decades, it was considered a land of transit or just a region where you only visit the beaches of the long coast. What Are The Ten Places You Must See In Calabria?
The Heritage of Calabria
The heritage of this region consists of medieval villages embedded between the rocks, often built overlooking the sea, to protect against Saracen invasions, or in pleasant scenic corners where life still happens according to the rhythms of the seasons; rich in historical and artistic memories. Just as an example, Calabria represents 5 centuries of survival to the collapse of the Roman Empire and Magna Graecia;
To complement, this region has a genuine and peculiar gastronomy. When it is time to eat, the place is never disappointing because it knows how to combine ancient knowledge and tradition with peculiar flavors which other tastes absorbed during the passage of the various dominations that have happened over the centuries.
The Calabria Nature and Enogastronomy
The term “Enogastronomic” (you can also find written as “enogastronomy”) it means ‘food and wine tourism’. Essentially, it’s an Italian word, enogastronomia and, also, it’s a “new” word and not very common… YET! 😉 Read also Enogastronomic Itinerary In Calabria
A nature that always amaze us by trekking enthusiasts and naturalists, Calabria it is still a land of extraordinary biodiversity such as bergamot, a citrus fruit that only grows in this area, the famous Calabria red onions, lemons and limes of Diamante and figs of Cosenza. Calabria is the land of the Moscato Passito de Saracena, the torroni of Bagnara, the swordfish of the Scilla; is a land of extraordinary wines and, among these, the oldest DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata – Denomination of Controlled Origin) in the world, the Ciró. The Codex Purpureus Rossanensis
A trip in Calabria should be done transversally, in the sense that one must go through history to admire a preciousness like the Codex Purpureus Rossanensis, or visit a castle like that of Santa Severina to enjoy a book in stone shape that tells 1200 years of truthful history. Still, one should not neglect art cities like Cosenza and not even ignore the fascination of a charming restaurant. And last but not least, one cannot fail to know ‘what is in people’s houses’, and not only for the sake of folklore, but mainly to absorb the flavors and traditions that in other places are only a memory.

How to get to Calabria?
Calabria, regarding the public transport, is linked to the ‘last places’ of practicality, however, you can arrive by plane, train or car; we’ll see how.
1) How to get to Calabria? BY PLANE
There are three airports in Calabria; the main one is Lamezia Terme Airport , then the Reggio Calabria Airport and, last but least, the Crotone Airport. There is also a Military Airport, in Vibo Valentia.
2) How to get to Calabria? BY TRAIN
The railway infrastructure in Calabria covers about 850 km of the territory. The basic complex is made by Tirrenica Rome-Naples – Praia-Paola-Lamezia Terme-Reggio Calabria, which connects the most important locations of the Tyrrhenian coast between them, the main cities of Campania and central Italy. Then there is the Eccelente-Rosarno line (via Tropea), a local tourist spot, which runs along the Tyrrhenian coast and the Rosarno-Gioia Tauro line, linking the port of Gioia Tauro with the national railway system.
3) How to get to Calabria? BY CAR
Calabria is accessible by car from any part of Italy, via the highway complex and, specifically, by the A3 Salerno – Reggio Calabria, which ends in Calabria.

NOTE:
- Check with your country’s Traffic Department which documents are required and the rates for issuing the IDP. If you chose to travel by car, be sure to read our Post “Driving in Italy“. It is very important to avoid winning fines for lack of information.
