A little more about Reggio Calabria
Reggio Calabria is a city that stands out for its unique sea and its history full of mysteries, secrets and crystalline waters in which it is possible to dive during great part of the year. A place where you can contemplate the sea and nature at the same time, because it seems that time has stopped and been lost. In this text, however, I will give you space, not the narrow city, but the places you can visit departing from Reggio Calabria; places that are not only those that, beautifully, have become famous for their natural and suggestive enjoyment, where it can be enjoyed by 9 of the 12 months of the year, but also by the neighboring cities rich in culture and entertainment such as Pentidattilo, Gerace, Scilla, Stilo and other important cities that are located near or in the province of Reggio Calabria. The best of the best! Itinerary 12 days in Calabria
1) What to do near Reggio Calabria? TO VISIT SCILLA
Let’s start from a small village located a few miles from Reggio Calabria, Scilla, near the sea that has always been frequented by tourists and artists. The name of the city is linked to mythology with the legend of Cila and Caríbdis, which were respectively one side of Calabria and the other of Sicily in the Strait of Messina. Beautiful beach, dominated by a castle within steps of distance, a small village, located at the top of the rock and a very beautiful view. The sunset seen from here is spectacular.
The characteristic narrow streets, tumbledown houses supported by the sea, small fountains, old constructions, small restaurants where you can taste delicacies of fresh fish, is only part of what this small village can offer. All this is crowned by the sound of the waves crashing on the rocks. Chianalea is like a painting with houses built on rocks overlooking the sea, appearing to be painted, well painted, and as often as in the same way connected offering to tourists incredible beauty. 2) What to do near Reggio Calabria? TO VISIT PENTADATTILO
Another place near Reggio Calabria which is worth visiting is Pentadattilo, a pretty village in the municipality of Melito Porto Salvo in the province of Reggio Calabria. Of the beautiful villages in Italy, where there are many, the magic that has Pentedattilo is not found anywhere else.
Already as soon as you arrive in front of this village, when you look at this stone that surrounds the houses, it is jaw dropped and unbelieving in front of a miraculous beauty that combines the advantages of nature and the good taste of man. 3) What to do near Reggio Calabria? TO VISIT GERACE
After Pentadattilo you have to stop in the spectacular Gerace, another small town in the province of Reggio Calabria, placed on a tufa cliff in the Aspromonte in a characteristic panoramic position in the Ionian Sea and a large part of the territory of Locri . Gerace is a city of great historical and artistic interest, especially in its important old town, which marked very ancient times.
The old town is along the street that reaches the Village Maggiore Gerace, where the road opens onto the stone. In the Norman era, Gerace became a principality, as well as an important religious center and throughout the territory, and several holy spots were distributed. Of great importance are also the small church of San Giovannello (tenth century) and the church of Santa Maria Del Mastro, with a Greek cross, besides the Cathedral.
In the historical center, between the churches, the castle and its beautiful streets that cross the city, you can enjoy the charm and fascination that this place projects and that only these places have, full of contrasts that combine well with each other by a single element: the past.

4) What to do near Reggio Calabria? TO VISIT STILLO
Another significant place in the province of Reggio Calabria is Stilo, a small center that rises as if carved on the tuff wall at the foot of Mount Consolino. This fascinating place appears to the visitor as a rich crib, zealously guarding secrets over the years. Let’s know Stilo?
The Stilo origin is linked to the destruction of the Magno-Greek city Kaulon (Caulonia) through the work of Dionysius of Siracusa, during the Greek period. The old town, which still retains its medieval origins, has a horseshoe shape, walls, the Laure, the remains of the castle and many small churches which make this center the most Byzantine in Calabria. In this area, Eastern monasticism settled, in the tenth century, seeking refuge from persecution and looking for the ideal of poverty and detachment from the world.
The main witness of the many Basilian hermit liturgical centers in Stilo, has as its flagship the Catholic, characteristic by its shape and its construction with brick materials, which gives it a reddish color. Calabria is a treasure that every year is visited by thousands of Italian and foreign tourists. Stilo, among other things, gave birth to the philosopher Tommaso Campanella and is the heart of the park dedicated to him.

Conclusion
Often the region of Calabria is identified by the sea and spicy food, but the specifics and points of tourist interest that the region offers, are very different from what emerges from that popular thinking. The discoveries are, definitely, the dozens of castles, fortresses and fortified towers that are scattered along the 780 km of the region in and around Reggio Calabria, which is definitely an undeniable testimony.
