The Travel Itinerary

From north to south, Italy is a peninsula to be discovered and appreciated. Even the ‘tip of the boot’ is occupied by a region rich in history and culture, with beautiful resorts, places with spectacular natural beauty, an enviable culinary tradition: Calabria, to visit and explore. And this is what you will do with a four-day trip passing through this wonderful region using public means of transportation (when possible). At this point, you just have to start the tour of the beautiful city of Reggio Calabria.

1) What to see in Calabria using public transportation in four days? FIRST DAY

First day – Arrive at Reggio Calabria airport, transfer by private bus to the hotel to leave luggage and then, immediately, a walk through the city. The visit can start from the Archaeological Museum, historical site and an important Palace of conservation of Italian culture; it possess one of the most important collections of artifacts of Ancient Greece and shelter of the famous Riace Bronzes.

Stop for lunch in a restaurant

After visiting the museum, stop for lunch in a restaurant and, in the afternoon, visit the famous Falcomatà waterfront. The coast is for the locals, and tourists, stage for walks and joggings, taking in the background a beautiful scenery of the canal, like scenes of a theater that changes with the seasons and that has the wind always present in the area; this scenario was defined by the poet Gabriele d’Annunzio, ‘the most beautiful kilometer in Italy’. Continue the walk visiting the Cathedral and the Botanical Garden. 2) What to see in Calabria using public transportation in four days? SECOND DAY

Second day – After a good breakfast, we leave the hotel to get to Reggio Calabria Station and get the train to Tropea and Capo Vaticano, where we will spend the night. Once you reach this picturesque village, Tropea, with typical maritime architecture, imposing, and numerous remains of Roman constructions, 17th and 18th century palaces with Spanish style on balconies, doors and gardens that open to squares and alleyways. A must-see is the Sanctuary of Santa Maria Island, known by being a Benedictine sanctuary of medieval origin, later transformed into basilica, with three arches of the Renaissance; frontage was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1905 and placed in a promontory, which has a spectacular view. We stopped in a typical restaurant, in the center, for a light lunch and then you will arrive, by bus, to another pearl of Calabria, Capo Vaticano. ABOUT MORE TROPEA!

3) What to see in Calabria using public transportation in four days? THIRD DAY

Third day: Breakfast and departure to the city of Cosenza, where we will spend the night (find out where to sleep in Cosenza). As soon as you arrive in the city of Bruzi and put your luggage in the hotel, you will learn about this important center of Calabria.

Cosenza’s Attractions

Cosenza is a lively university town, with an important historic center, which houses some noble buildings and beautiful churches such as the Cathedral and the Church of Saint Dominic. The visit starts at the beginning of the city, starting from the church of St Dominic, with the adjacent convent. Continue on Corso Telesio, until 1898 called ‘street and jewelery trade’, to confirm the artisanal vocation and trade in Cosenza. Continuing to walk, you will find the city’s Cathedral, which dates back to the 12th century. At the bottom of Corso Telesio, there is Piazza XV Marzo (“March 15th Square”), in front of the garden of Villa Comunale, decorated with a bronze monument in honor of Bernardino Telesio.

Here you can see, on one side, the Rendano Theater and, on the other, the Government Palace, and, always on foot, you can reach the Church of St Francis Assisi. Finally, there is the Swabian Castle, which dominates the Pancratius hill. Built by the Normans, this important monastic complex, which consists of a church and a convent, was first enlarged and transformed by Frederick II and then by the Anjou, who built a royal residence. After such a long trip, relax with an excellent dinner in one of the many typical Cosenza locations and then go to bed. Where to stay in Cosenza?

4) What to see in Calabria using public transportation in four days? FOURTH DAY

Fourth day: After a good breakfast, we go, always by train, to the city of St Francis, in Paola. This Tyrrhenian place is known for being the birthplace of St Francis, the patron saint of Calabria and sailors. The saint built a church here, which today has been transformed into a sanctuary, and which is visited annually by many tourists and pilgrims. Therefore, it is worthwhile to arrive at the Shrine and visit the famous Basilica. At this point, you can also make a short stop in the center of Paola, for a coffee at Piazza del Popolo (Popolo Square) and take a look at the beautiful waterfront. Return to Cosenza

5) What to see in Calabria using public transportation in four days? FIFTH DAY

Fifth day: Today is the last day, departure day. I advise you to do nothing that day, just get ready to leave, because using public transport we need time to get to places, and public transport is always unpredictable.

How to get there?

Calabria, regarding public transport, is linked to the ‘last places’ of practicality, however, you can arrive by plane, train or car, we’ll see how.

1) How to get there? BY PLANE

There are three airports, the main one being Lamezia Terme Airport, then the Reggio Calabria Airport and, last but not least, the Crotone Airport. There is also a Military Airport in Vibo Valentia.

2) How to get there? BY TRAIN

The railway infrastructure in Calabria covers about 850 km of lines. The basic complex is made by Tirrenica Rome-Naples – Praia -Paola-Lamezia Terme-Reggio Calabria, which connects the most important sites of the Tyrrhenian Coast between them, the main cities of Campania and central Italy. Then there is the Eccelente-Rosarno line (via Tropea), a local tourist spot, which runs along the Tyrrhenian coast and the Rosarno-Gioia Tauro line, linking the port of Gioia Tauro with the national railway network. 3) How to get there? BY CAR

Calabria is accessible by car from any part of Italy, via the highway network and, specifically, by the A3 Salerno – Reggio Calabria, ending in Calabria.

IMPORTANT TO KNOW!

  • Remember that to drive in Italy it is MANDATORY to have the International Driving License, the famous IDP (International Driving Permit). The certificate is not issued in Italian, but it is accepted in English! The IDP lasts 180 days (it depends where you live) and is issued by the Traffic Department of your country (if you have the European Driver License, you don’t need to worry about it!).
