Lets go to know our Calabria?
1) Why Know Calabria? BECAUSE YOUR LAND IS FERTILE RICH OF TYPICAL PRODUCTS
It is no coincidence that the etymology of the name Calabria, derived from the Greek, means ‘I do good’ and fertile soil; even today, the entire coastal area is rich with vast olive groves, orange plantations and typical products such as: bergamot and cedar; moreover, there are numerous and invaluable, the traits that the Greek and Roman civilizations have left in the territory; but unfortunately the Calabrian people are not fully aware of its wonderful history. Why Visit Tropea In Calabria?
2) Why Know Calabria? BECAUSE CALABRIA OFFERS A VARIETY OF LANDSCAPES AND INFLUENCES OF PEOPLE!
Calabria, therefore, offers a wide variety of landscapes; you can admire the clear sea (the Tyrrhenian Sea to the west and the Ionian Sea to the east) which surrounds practically the whole region of the Pollino Mountains, the plateau and the wonderful lakes of Sila. This region was influenced by several peoples who, over the centuries, dominated it; Greeks, Romans, Normans, Aragonese, as was very clear the influence of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies until the unification of Italy. Therefore, to travel through Calabria will be to know and to witness the influences that these people have left in the region!
3) Why Know Calabria? BECAUSE CALABRIA IS RICH IN MUST-SEE ATTRACTIONS
Among the main attractions we can mention the Aragonese Castle in Reggio Calabria, the Norman-Swabian castle in Cosenza, the Anjou’s Aragonese Castle in Pizzo Calabro, and the Catholic Church in the borough of Stilo, with its important Byzantine architecture. Among the archaeological sites we cannot forget the Temple of Hera Lacinia in Crotone, the ancient city of Sybaris and one of the most prosperous cities of Magna Graecia, as well as Locri, Medma and other smaller archaeological sites scattered throughout Calabria.
The Religious Buildings of Calabria
Strong is also the presence of religious buildings, especially the churches that are located in the main cities and in the medieval boroughs; among the most important places of worship, I recommend a visit the Catholic, in Stilo, considered one of the most important examples of Byzantine architecture in southern Italy; the Florentine Abbey in San Giovanni in Fiore, the Duomo of Cosenza, the Saint Francis Sanctuary, in Paola, the Sanctuary of Santa Maria delle Armi near Cerchiara Calabria and the national monument of the Church of San Bernardino of Siena in Amantea, just to mention some of the most important religious complexes.
Let´s Visit Reggio Calabria
I cannot fail to remember the first Greek colony in Calabria, the city of Reggio Calabria, which today is considered one of the most beautiful in the region, whether from the historical, architectural or natural point of view: Reggio Calabria, is known throughout Italy by Corso Garibaldi, full of shops, bars and restaurants and especially its museum, which houses the famous Riace Bronzes, two bronze statues of Greek origin, greatly conserved, they are considered masterpieces of the archaic Greek sculpture, one of the few sculptures of that period of history that still exist today in the world (practically intact), which is why they are so important!
Let´s Visit Cosenza
Another tip is the visit of another important city, Cosenza; among its beauties to be seen, the UNESCO-recognized Duomo, the Swabian Castle, an important millennial fortress that hosted King Frederick II, the Arnone Palace, home to a National Gallery and which houses the icon of Our Lady of Pilerio (matron of the city), the Stauroteca, a relic containing a small piece of the cross of Christ, which was donated to the city by Frederick II.
Let´s Visit the Villages of Calabria
In the middle of the beauties of this region, I cannot fail to mention a few villages, which although they are few known, hide great treasures that are worth exploring: Altomonte, Morano Calabro, Gerace, Bova and Scilla, Tropea (very popular), Stilo (known for the Catholic), Santa Severina (much love for this place!) and Amantea, Scalea; these villages are worth discovering not only for their beautiful old town, super valued and preserved, but also for knowing their cultural and gastronomic tradition!
Let´s Visit the Calabria Parks
Calabria has some national parks that have been treasured in recent years, such as National Park of Sila , Polino and Aspromonte; these parks are ideal targets for mountain tourism! Among the various activities, I recommend trekking, in the various trails, and rafting. In addition, few know, but the Park of Sila also has a ski slope that, during winter, turns into a wonderful goal for ‘white tourism’! Will you lose these great attractions?
Sun and Sea Tourism in Calabria
Calabria is currently one of the favorite destinations of Italians for tourism ‘sun and sea’; destinations such as Tropea (the southern pearl), Pizzo, Isola Capo Rizzuto, Diamante, Scalea, Capo Vaticano; these places transform themselves every year, from June until September, in the preferred target of thousands and thousands of Italians and Europeans. The beauties of Calabrian shores are famous throughout Europe, so if you are coming in this period be sure to know the destinations I mentioned!
The Calabrian Gastronomy
The various peoples who lived in Calabria not only left cultural riches but also so many culinary traditions, the authenticity and unmistakable flavor of their products are recognized in the world! Calabrian cuisine offers a wide range of local products such as the famous ‘Nduja’, of Spilsby, the red onion of Tropea, the Pecorino del Poro, extra virgin olive oil, wine and herbal liqueurs among the citrus fruits of Calabria, as well as many spices, including the famous Calabrian pepper, the tasty dried tomatoes, etc. Read also Enogastronomic Itinerary In Calabria
The result of old traditions, transmitted from father to son, combined with the excellent weather and an enviable geography, make this region one of the best in Italy, so a trip in Calabria is also a trip to search for flavors that will stay forever in your mind and on your palate! A region very versatile that offers so many attractions, from landscaping, cultural, enogastronomic and, undoubtedly, a region that is worth to be known and recognized! A Little more of the Beauties of Calabria
A little more about Calabria …
Calabria, land of sweat, sacrifice and authentic love, land of dominations, land of so many struggles! Calabria is a land with a big heart and that will surprise you with the scent of the sea, with the light of its sun, with the magic of its colors, with its natural wonders, with the tranquility and peace of its villages, with the flavors of the its products and mainly and with the warmth of its people.
What else can I say about this land?
Beautiful land, simple, humble and fragrant! An ancient land illuminated by the sun and embraced by the sea. Its coast is so fascinating to the point of being called ‘Coast of the Gods’ or ‘Costa Bella’. I want to define it not only as the tip of the boot (Italy is known geographically by the shape of a boot), but mainly as a springboard for Sicily, another wonderful region of southern Italy which we will talk about next month!
