Calabria is one of the most popular vacation regions on the coast and this reputation is largely due to its beautiful beaches and crystalline sea that bathes its coast, not to mention the typical climate of the city and the traditions rooted in this strip of land. Tropea is an important center of Calabria, province of Vibo Valentia, is known mainly for the beautiful landscape and especially for its wonderful waters. The upper part of the city was built on a rock, overlooking the sea, creating a scenario in the least suggestive.
According to researches, Tropea was inhabited since the Neolithic era. Evidence has shown that the city was very important in two consecutive periods: first, under Norman Empire and later, in the nineteenth century, when it was used as a strategic point for the boats of Gioacchino Muràt, who planned to conquer Sicily. A small town full of traditions that explore the growing tourist development and have so much to be explored.
Let’s learn how to visit Tropea!
Once you’re in Tropea, you can see that the city is very compact, so the places of interest and hotels are, almost, all outside the center. In this small village there are few hotels, and during the summer season they flood with extremely easy. The little town itself can be visited in two days. The main attractions are the Museum and the Church of Nostra Signora Dell’Isola (Our Lady of the Island), but there are also several other places that deserve to be seen. The city has incredible views that can be admired on the hillside at the end of the main boulevard.
1) Why visit Tropea in Calabria? SEE THE OLD TOWN OF TROPEA
Let’s start our tour exactly in the old town of Tropea, which is one of the most interesting in all Calabria (certainly the best preserved, with constructions of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries). There are countless mansions with 18th century balconies, with those imposing portals at the entrance to the palaces, with the coats of arms of the most important families from the former local aristocracy.
Inside the mansions, it is possible to explore the old traditions of the craftsmen of great talents, which worked reaching from pieces of wood to pottery. In addition, it is possible to taste the various typical products of the region, such as the famous ‘Nduja’ and the purple onions of Tropea, among other specialties (such as marmalade) in a small restaurant throughout the old town streets.
2) Why visit Tropea in Calabria? SEE THE TOURIST PORT
Close to the historical center there is a tourist port with 400 places for boats, with floating jetties are equipped with electric power, sanitary system and fire brigade. From here it is possible to quickly access the Aeolian Islands and other small towns, such as Capo Vaticano, Parghelia, Ricadi, Briatico and Zambrone.
If you are in the area during high season, you cannot miss going to the coast, especially on the beach facing the rock on which is the Church of Our Lady of the Island, one of the important points of the city! Here you will find a large swimming beach, with ample parking and, above all, an extraordinary beauty cave – the perfect setting for an unforgettable photo shoot.
3) Why visit Tropea in Calabria? SEE THE OUR LADY OF THE ISLAND
The church of Our Lady of the Island has become the worldwide symbol of Tropea. It is a Benedictine sanctuary of medieval origin. It is an imposing building, which stands on a slope on the beach of Tropea.
From the beach you can climb, if you wish, to the top of the rock, where it is possible to visit the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Island. The church has medieval origins (though it has been rebuilt several times due earthquakes). In its interior, the church houses numerous very beautiful ancient tombs. The climb is fatiguing, but without a doubt: worth it! From the top of the hill the view is unique and very inspiring; if you have time, you can stay up to the sunset to enjoy an unforgettable scene with a lovely landscape.
Another church of great interest is the Cathedral. Also from medieval times, it dates back to the 12th century and was built on a pre-existing cemetery. On the frontage of the cathedral, there is an ample portico with oval stone arches and false windows. Inside the church, countless works of art are preserved, including a black crucifix from the late 16th century and the icon of Our Lady of Romania (from the XIII century Gothic gypsum movement) covered with layers of silver; a beautiful artistic representation of the Byzantine period.
Just take a walk through the streets of the city and you will find several shops, mainly in Villetta Del Cannone, where you can admire a fantastic view of the sea. There are some interesting palaces in Tropea, such as the Baroque Palace, Baron’s Palace and the Zinnato Palace (with granite portals).
Besides, it still has the beautiful crystalline sea and the beaches with white sands. This paradisiacal image is known all over the world, every beach in Tropea is fascinating. I cannot even tell which is the most beautiful, because they are all wonderful.
