A little about Calabria

When we talk about Calabria, we think of the sea, splendid beaches and abundant nature, and it is this cinematic scenario, combined with a spectacular climate, that offers the region to do something extraordinary: produce impeccable wines! Calabria, like all Italian regions, produces divine wines and has, of course, a Wine Road, which we are going to know today.

1) Wine road in Calabria: Forest and Wine Road

The chestnuts and olive trees of the area are surrounded by vineyards that produce excellent wines of Denomination of Controlled Origin: Savuto Rosso and Savuto Rosato; in addition to the traditional Sopressa, which receives the Protected Designation of Origin. 2) Wine road in Calabria: Cassiodorei Flavors Road

On this incredible route, olive oil deserves to be highlighted. Olive trees are grown organically, and most of the products made here follow the same line. Wild asparagus and herbs mix with orchards and vegetable gardens and offer us unique panoramas. 3) Wine road in Calabria: Cosentino Tirreno Medium Flavors Road

4) Wine road in Calabria: Pore Flavors Route

Flavors, aromas, colors and more flavors! So we can define the delicious Poro Route. Here, Vibonese products offer several bags and products with strong and striking flavor. Among them we find Spilinga Nduja, Peccorino de Monte Poro, the famous onion of Tropea, and also worth mentioning: the olive oil produced in the area, the traditional and famous Pizzo truffle and Soriano’s Mostaccioli. 5) Wine road in Calabria: Sibaritide Flavors Road

Passing through the historic center of Calabria, it is a splendid territory and an area of two very important wines for the Calabrian region: the IGT, Esaro and Valle del Crati. 6) Wine road in Calabria: Silani Flavors Road

Here we have five highlights of great importance: the potato, the forests, the livestock sector, chestnuts and the production of cereals. It is impossible to come here without mentioning the magnificent Caciocavallo Silano DOP cheese and the delicious Pancetta di Calabria, also DOP. 7) Wine road in Calabria: Knowledge and Flavors Wine Route

Here the vineyards deserve to be highlighted! We find vineyards from Gaglioppo, Greco Nero, Tuscan Trebbiano, Malvasia and Greco Bianco. We also find Chardonnay and Cabernet vineyards, cultivated by the most ‘modern’, however, this section of the wine route is devoted fervently to Cirò and Melissa, very important DOCS wines from this region. 8) Wine road in Calabria: Brutium Wine and Flavors Route

Here we find the precious DOCs: Donnici, south of Cosenza, and to the north the most recent member of the family, San Vito di Luzzi, who is the direct heir to the wine produced by the monks of the Abbey of Sambucina. The flavors are also due to other products such as Capocollo DOP, Pancetta DOP, Dipignano sponge cake, DOP sausage and DOP soppressata.

9) Wine road in Calabria: Lamezia Wine and Flavors Route

Here the products are always excellent. We can mention, among the wines that deserve mention: Lamezia DOC, Valdamato IGT and Calabria IGT; when we talk about exceptional products, it would be a huge injustice to leave out of the list unique and spectacular flavors like capocollo di Calabria DOP, the traditional red onion from Tropea, the IGP clementine, the fig crocette, the cuzzupe, the cheeses, the liquor lemon, extra virgin olive oil, and soppressata di Calabria.

10) Wine road in Calabria: Locride Wine and Flavors Route

The famous region of the unique Greco di Bianco DOC. It is the most interesting and famous wine in Calabria. The amber color of this wine is due to the phenolic development of very ripe grapes. The wine has a juicy and velvety texture, with a bouquet of aromas that remind us of orange blossoms, citrus and herbal notes, which gain prominence with the maturation of the wine.

The Greco di Bianco DOC is different from all other wines produced in the region, as it is softer on the palate. The wine is produced with partially dried grapes before being crushed and fermented; in this process, the natural sugars in the musts are concentrated, which increases the alcohol content of the wine by up to 17% (or higher).

11) Wine road in Calabria: Pollino-Castrovillari Wine and Flavors Route

And finally, we conclude our list with the area responsible for the incredible Pollino DOC. This demonination represents one of the most important wine-growing areas in Calabria. All wines of the Pollino DOC appellation are based on the grape varieties used in the production of the wine. The wine has a ruby red color, an intense and fruity aroma – with an aroma of plum and currant and, in the mouth, it is dry and tasty. It is something that, in fact, tastes divine!

This region has many medieval villages embedded in rocks, often built overlooking the sea, to protect themselves against Saracen invasions or in pleasant panoramic corners where life still happens according to the rhythm of each season.
