Before you start reading, get to know a little about Locri!
Locri occupies an important position in history: it is the most important archaeological area in Calabria and one of the cradles of Greek influence in the country. This story, of course, can be known to its visitors. Once in Locri, you can visit the Archaeological Park, the Greco-Roman theater, the temples and, of course, the churches in the area. A little bit of Locri’s history
Locri was founded at the end of the 8th century BC (Strabo). According to Aristotle, the city was founded by Lochres women and their slaves, as their husbands were involved in war, which led women to assume great importance in the Colony.
As early as 205 BC, its development began. Several Roman statues and other historical objects were found in its territory, responsible for making it one of the main archaeological centers in the southern region of Italy.
1) What to do in Locri, Calabria? National Archaeological Museum of Locri
It is evident that we could not start talking about Locri without mentioning its main attraction: the National Archaeological Museum of Locri. Although quite recent, inaugurated in 1971 and receiving the title of national museum only in 1998, it is responsible for attracting thousands of tourists to the region.
In the museum you will find a center of Greek culture, preserving the history of the city. It is also possible to know a little more about the lives of locresas women, who, as we mentioned earlier, are key parts of local development.
The museum is divided into two floors and both are occupied by various pieces, such as sarcophagi, stones and architectural elements, and the upper floor is where you will have the experience of visiting the places where the artifacts were found, which offers a dimension even deeper into the past. The Archaeological Museum also hosts presentations, meetings and activities related to archaeology.

3) What to do in Locri, Calabria? Teatro di Locri Epizefiri
If you are interested in the Archaeological Museum, you will also like to visit the Teatro di Locri
Epizefiri, a traditional Greek theater, like the ones we see in the movies.
Although today the monument is reduced to ruins, it is still possible to feel all the energy of the
place, opening the imagination to live a little of that past. There are criticisms of the rulers of Locri and of Italy as a whole for not valuing such history, failing to provide the necessary maintenance to the theater. However, that doesn’t take away all the beauty.

4) What to do in Locri, Calabria? Monument to Nosside
Nosside is a famous Greek poet, born and raised in Locri. Her writings were largely lost due to time – it is known that she lived in the beginning of the 3rd century BC. The few that remained and were known were enough to justify her fame: the author of loving and gentle poetry, many dedicated to women, she was constantly referenced by her contemporaries and successors.
She is so important that not only the city has a monument dedicated to her, but she also nominates the Nosside International Poetry Prize, which takes place in Reggio Calabria once a year.
Locri, in itself, is worth mentioning, is a city that has poetry in its origins. Also annually, it hosts the National Poetry Prize called June Locrese, which has been taking place for over fifty years in the city.
5) What to do in Locri, Calabria? Church of Santa Caterina
You may already know that Calabria is rich in religious tourism, right? Well, you couldn’t miss a visit to the Chiesa di Santa Caterina, which occupies a central place in Locri.
The Church dates back to 1843, when some fishermen from the coast of Gerace founded their first place of worship there, in a village by the sea, in a small room provided by the City Hall. The structure itself was built in 1855, more than ten years later, but even before that, it had already fulfilled the role of receiving the faithful from the region.
