Our introduction

San Marco Argentano, a mountain village, has a panorama full of green mountains covered with beech trees that alternate with olive groves and cultivated fields. During Sibari’s rule, the city was known as “Argyros” due to the presence of some small silver mines that were used to mint “o incuso” (ancient sybarite coin). With the rise of the Romans in 282 BC it takes the name “Argentanum” and in 969 AD. in memory of the evangelization of the apostle Marcos it is called San Marco Argentano.

The most important turning point for the village was the presence of Roberto il Guiscardo who, in 1048, transformed it into a fortified city. To the Normans we owe the strategic valorization of the place for the control of the valley of the River Fullone, the administrative political centrality and the monumental development of the city.

Let’s get to know the attractions of San Marco Argentano?

San Marco Argentano is full of historical and religious attractions. From the Norman Crypt, to the Norman Tower, from the Cathedral Church to the convent of the Reformation and to Benedetta. 1) What to do in San Marco Argentano? GET TO KNOW THE HISTORICAL CENTER

Walking through the historic center of San Marco Argentano is very relaxing and as you walk you can see the various buildings of the old noble families and discover its silent streets, but rich in a harmonious past and in culture!

2) What to do in San Marco Argentano? VISIT THE CATHEDRAL

The Cathedral is dedicated to Saint Nicholas (Bishop of Mira) and, together with the structures of the episcope building, forms a monumental complex that is independent of the structure of the Saint Mark’s building.

Founded in Normandy for many centuries, it preserved the original layout and then, between the 17th and 18th centuries, it underwent baroque additions that distorted its original features. It was damaged by the earthquakes of 1905 and 1908, but was later renovated. The smaller nave, on the left, houses the chapel of the Madonna del Rosario. According to a legend, this statue cured the population of San Marco from the plague of 1700.

During the works, the underlying structure, the Norman Crypt, came to light and was included in the reconstruction project curated by the pontifical of the parish houses in conjunction with the superintendence.

3) What to do in San Marco Argentano? VISIT THE NORMAN CRYPT

The Norman Crypt is accessed through two internal stairs that connect the work with the Cathedral above and a main door that connects it with the exterior. The Norman Crypt for several centuries was used as a burial place for bishops, clergy and laity. It was then closed for decades, almost forgotten.

The turning point and the return to light took place in 1935 by the will of Archbishop Demetrio Moscati, who ordered the Crypt to be reorganized, removing the burials and internal divisions.

Today the structure, enclosed in its thick walls, maintains its tranquility highlighted by the presence of a chapel dedicated to Blessed Mons. Castrillo and the bust of San Francesco di Paola to whom the miracle of the “Scivolenta” is attributed.

4) What to do in San Marco Argentano? GET TO KNOW THE NORMAN TOWER

Once in the typical Piazza Umberto I and taking Via Roberto il Guiscardo, we arrive at the Normandy Tower, also known as di Drogone.

The structure is characterized by a huge cone called a “motta” and is divided into five floors, called rooms:

– Grain Room (ground floor)
– Hall of Prisons (first floor)
– Hall of Arms (second floor and entrance hall)
– Auditorium (third floor)
– Sala del Principe (fourth floor)

In addition to its structural charm, the Tower hides a history rich in magic, folklore, sayings about its creation and various events that accompanied the characters who lived there.

Many popular legends are told. For example, it is said that when girls pronounce the name of Sikelgaita, second wife of Roberto il Guiscardo, they feel their skin or hair brushed. Another legend says that whoever enters or leaves the tower, out of politeness, should always greet the landlord or “il Guiscardo”.

5) What to do in San Marco Argentano? DISCOVER PIAZZA RIFORMA

Going up the main street of San Marco Argentano, we arrive at Piazza Riforma, where the Monastic Complex of Sant’Antonio – or dei Riformati – and Benedetta are located.

The complex represents one of the oldest examples of Franciscan architecture in Calabria and has undergone numerous transformations over time.

Main Area

From 1429 to 1430 it housed San Francesco di Paola, as attested by the small votive chapel (located inside the Benedetta), the small garden (where the Saint used to pray) and the small window with a single lancet that illuminated the cell where the little Saint lived. . All this is confirmed by an inscription present at the site that mentions: Haec est fenestia cellae, in qua habitavit Franciscus de Paula A.D. 1429 (This is the window of the cell where Francesco de Paola lived).

La Benedetta

La Benedetta, located inside the Villa Comunale named after General Dalla Chiesa, was built in 1762 in a small cave where Saint Francis of Paola used to gather in prayer. It was restored in 1929 and is currently a place of pilgrimage. Inside is a 19th-century painting depicting Saint Francis of Assisi with the intention of speaking to the Saint Paul.
