1) Why visit Vibo Valentia? THE CASTLE
You must have noticed that there is no shortage of castles in Calabria, right? Also, see here What are the must-see castles in Calabria?
In Vibo Valentia, it’s no different. You can visit the Norman-Swabian Castle, which, although it is not possible to give a precise date of construction, was enlarged in 1289, so it is even older than that. During the Aragonese domination, it was restored.
The 1783 earthquake ended up causing the demolition of the second floor and, currently, the preserved structure is limited to cylindrical towers, a rammed tower, and an arch, but what deserves our visit is the State Archaeological Museum.
2) Why visit Vibo Valentia? VITO CAPIALBI ARCHEOLOGICAL MUSEUM
Located inside the old castle, the Vito Capialbi Archaeological Museum is responsible for storing numerous archaeological finds from Italy and also of Greek and Roman origin – find out here Greeks and Calabria: what is the relationship?
In addition to all the history kept and preserved in the Museum, it also allows a wide view of Vibo Valentia, uniting beauty, history, and culture uniquely!
3) Why visit Vibo Valentia? THE CHURCHES
Religious tourism enthusiasts cannot fail to include this small Italian commune in their itinerary: there are at least 10 beautiful churches in the region.
The main ones are the Churches of Santa Maria Maggiore and San Leoluca, the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli, and the Church of Santa Maria la Nova.
Church of Santa Maria Maggiore and San Leoluca
It is the main church of Vibo Valentia and its origins date back to the 500s and 600s when it was built on the remains of a Byzantine basilica. Like many other Italian monuments, it suffered damage from the 1783 earthquake but was restored.
It is characterized as having a single nave, with the beauty in charge of neoclassical frescoes from the 19th century. There, you can also find the 18th-century high altar and a sculpture close to the Madonna della Neve, attributed to the 16th century.
Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli
It is also a historic structure, although younger than the previous one: it was built between 1621 and 1666 and its conservation has been in the hands of the Capuchin Fathers – since 1866 when they took on this task.
The Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli, in Vibo Valentia, is the destination of thousands of devotees who flock to it on Fridays in March every year. On-site, it is possible to get to know the Degli Angeli Crucifix, sought after by these devotees.
Church of Santa Maria la Nova
Responsible for housing different styles, this Church was built in 1521, under the name of Santa Maria del Gesù. It was used during the war as a military fort and later reopened to the public. 4) Why visit Vibo Valentia? VIBO MARINA
Such is the importance of this port, which is considered a fraction of Vibo Valentia, where approximately 10 thousand inhabitants live.
Originally, it was called Porto Santa Venere, due to the legend that fishermen found a statue of Venus (Venere) there.
The port was highlighted in the war, when, on September 8, 1943, the English 8th Army landed there, aiming to finish off the German units.
Economic importance
Vibo Marina is also central to the region’s economy, distributing mainly oil and cement, in addition to fishing and tourism products. It has a strong connection with the Aeolian Islands.
Porto Santa Venere
Since 2007, a bill has been pending in the Regional Council of Calabria that aims to create the municipality of Porto Santa Venere, as well as the original name of Vibo Marina, covering four villages: Vibo Marina, Bivona, Portosalvo, and Longobardi.
