Those who follow our blog, and our social networks, are aware of my great love for Calabria: I have lived in the region for years, I built my family and my life here, I am a tour guide and accredited tourist escort in the region. I have always made a point of promoting this splendid area, as it is a region that receives its tourists in an authentic, affectionate and very charming way.

A few days ago I was invited by the mayor of Parenti, Donatela Deposito (whom I greatly thank) to visit the village and get to know the place better. I confess that I was enchanted! The city is a charm and, it is worth remembering, it is located inside the Sila Park, in the province of Cosenza, as mentioned above. In other words, the place is immersed in nature! Once there, I was introduced to a beautiful project, called “Sei ospite a Parenti” (You are a guest at Parenti), which is innovative and unlike anything you’ve ever seen, you can be sure! Parenti is 32 kilometers from Cosenza and, nearby, you can find other cities that, if you have time, are worth a visit; you can visit Aprigliano, Bianchi, Colosimi, Marzi, Rogliano and the city where I live, Santo Stefano di Rogliano – by the way, if you’re here, let me know so we can have a coffee! I will love meeting you!

Parenti is small, so it’s possible to get to know it, breezily, in just one day, but as I always say: don’t take your trip in a hurry! Savor the place, live like the locals! Forget about the clock, the problems… Rest assured that your tour will be much more enjoyable!

We start our tour departing from Via Silana. From there you can go up the Fontana, pass the Main Church – which we will see when we return – and continue until the ascent of Timparello. At the top of the climb, you will find Corso Umberto, where you can make a strategic stop to have a coffee and catch your breath.

Then return to Corso Umberto: this is the city’s main street and is where the Church of Madonna del Carmine is located. This is the main church in the city and, although there is no documentation, many claim that it was built in 1743. With an elegant, but very simple facade, the church has, beside it, a beautiful three-story belfry and, at its corners, angels who bless the place.

TIP:

since 1980, the city has promoted a folkloric-culinary event known as the “Potato Festival” (La Sagra della Patata), which is always held on the last Sunday in August. The festival is one of the most celebrated in the city and fills the streets with stalls where they sell, of course, potato-based dishes – Parenti’s potatoes are DOP and very famous in the region. Another very interesting party is the “Cart Race”, which usually takes place on the third Sunday in September. It is a competition conceived by Pietro Rizzuto and Carmine Venneri, in 1992. Both events are ideal for those who want to LIVE the city in a unique way and, together with local residents, spend unique, unforgettable and joyful moments! Is is Worth it? YES, IT IS!

A little of history…

Parenti was founded between the end of the 17th century and the beginning of the 18th century by Luigi Ricciulli. The village was born around a farm that belonged to him and the toponym could come from the Latin PARENTIUS. Some also say that the name came from its geographical position: “hidden”, the city may have served as a refuge for the ‘relatives’ (parenti in Italian) of the bandits who roamed the region.

What to see near Parenti:

Near the city, I suggest you to visit three cities that deserve to be highlighted:

  1. Cosenza: known as Athens of Calabria, it has a privileged position and is situated in a natural frame of hills, in the Crati Valley, right at the confluence of the Busento river, which divides the modern part of the city from its historic center.
  2. Santa Severina: another village that deserves attention! It is considered one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, but it is little known by tourists. Santa Severina is a Calabrian town in the province of Crotone, and it is also known as “the stone ship” for its unique shape that reminds us of a ship. There, you can visit the baptistery, castle and cathedral, which represents the most important Byzantine evidence in Calabria.
  3. Catanzaro: The capital of the region of Calabria! The kind of city that, without any presumption, wins our hearts over, both for its natural richness and its historical richness. It is also little known by most tourists, but it offers us unique culture, history and beauties.

TIP:

Sila’s park itself is ideal for nature lovers! There you will find landscapes of completely unspoiled areas and others where nature combines, in perfect harmony, with its picturesque local towns. The nearest airport is Lamezia Terme, at 55 km away from there.

2) How to get there? BY CAR

Along the highway, to get to Parenti, use the exits closest to the center which are: Rogliano – Grimaldi or Salerno-Reggio Calabria exit, which is 9.47 km from the city center

Our website will provide information about the more “tourist-friendly” Calabria and the less touristy – and therefore more authentic – Calabria, the one entrenched among medieval towns! This region has many medieval villages embedded in rocks, often built overlooking the sea, to protect themselves against Saracen invasions or in pleasant panoramic corners where life still happens according to the rhythm of each season.
