Discover the San Floro Sunflower Field…

Sunflowers always enchant our eyes, don’t they? The yellow contrasts perfectly with the seeds and the stem, they draw our attention and seem to mesmerize those in love with flowers. The (beautiful!) field of San Floro has more than 20,000 sunflowers. Calabrian agricultural entrepreneur Stefano Caccavari revived the organic cultivation of ancient grains and created the majestic landscape of San Floro. Mulinum is born, which from an agricultural startup became a model exported to other regions. Stefano was inspired by a view of a large field of sunflowers, during a trip to Tuscany. So, on a hectare and a half of land, he decided to change the landscape of San Floro. Read here What Are The Ten Places You Must See in Calabria?

Shall we get to know the small and charming town of San Floro?

First, let’s get to know a little more about the small and charming town of San Floro. San Floro was born in prehistory, in the Neolithic period. Some archaeological findings in the region attest that it was also a colony of Scylletium, in Magna Graecia.

The colonizers soon saw, at that time, a great and rich potential of the abundant bounded area and untouched vegetation, making that area the ideal place for the breeding of cattle and prosperous forests rich in wood. Here was also Squillace‘s old farmhouse, until the end of the 15th century, when it was dismembered by the Strivieri family. Until 1599, it belonged to the Mangione and later returned to the Strivieri. Between 1643 to 1711, it belonged to Cesare Marincola di Catanzaro; later, until the subversion of feudalism, to the Girifalco’s feud under Duke Nicola Maria Caracciolo, who used the castle (well preserved until today) as his summer residence. A little more about San Floro…

The city suffered serious damage due to an earthquake in 1783, which destroyed the old church of Saint Caterina. Howerver, after the administrative order of Championnet, it was inserted in the canton of Catanzaro, and in 1807 the French placed it under the government of Squillace. In 1811, it was attributed to the district of Borgia, a contribution that remained unchanged even after the reorganization ordered by the Bourbons, in 1816.

The name of the city reflects the strong veneration for its patron, Saint Floro Martyr, who together with his brother Lauro, for not having abandoned his ideals of Christian faith, was arrested, condemned, demoted to a well and buried alive. Every year, on August 18th, the inhabitants of the city honor their patron with a solemn mass and the typical procession through the streets of the city.

Curiosity

The city is famous for its white figs. The process of preparing white figs is, until today, artisanal and they are dried in the same way that they were dried in the past: by the method of natural drying in the sun. No wonder, San Floro has been known, since 1900, as the “Land of Figs”.

Curiosities about the Sunflower

Stay now with our CURIOSITIES section…

Why does the sunflower ‘turn’ to the sun?

This is because the plant captures the greatest possible amount of solar energy to absorb more light and to be able to manufacture energy. Its flower is actually a set that can hold up to 2,000 microflowers that are in the circle between the petals. When it identifies the sun’s rays, auxin (plant hormones) – which is present in the plant’s cells – changes to the unlighted part of the plants, as if it ‘fled’ from the light. For this reason, the flower turns towards the sun. After the sun goes down, this effect stops and the sunflower returns to its original position. But this ‘back-and-forth spins’ only last until the vegetable blooms, after that the plant is always facing east.

The Sunflower (Helianthus annuus)

The sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is a plant that blooms annually and is part of the family of Asteraceae, tribe Heliantheae. It is cultivated, not only for its beauty, but also for its oil and its edible fruits. It has large flowers, ranging from 30 cm and can reach 3 meters in height. They are plants that came from North America, where indigenous peoples cultivated it; other cultures considered it the sun god.
