1) Discover Caccuri: THE CASTELLO DI CACCURI

Center of city life, both now and in the past, when it assumed political and social importance in the dynamics of the region, the Castello di Caccuri, or Castle of Caccuri, was built by the Byzantines in the 6th century. Its position demonstrates the nature of a military fort: strategic, it contemplates the view of Sila and also of the sea. It is possible to stay at the Castle and experience life in the Caccuri region as fully as possible.

It is important to say that the Castle was almost demolished in the 18th century, but luckily it survived this intervention. I suggest that, once there, you visit the Palatine Chapel, which honors Santa Barbara, and visit the Mastrigli Tower, built to disguise a water tank and which today is part of the village’s municipal coat of arms.

Perfect for romance

Caccuri Castle has the romance in its origins: it was given as a dowry by Polissena Ruffo, heiress of an important family in Naples, to her husband, Francesco Sforza, who would be the future Duke of Milan.

In addition, it also welcomes love in an exceptional way: it is possible to have your wedding in the Castle! That’s right: the ceremony happens in the Palatine Chapel and the reception is in the old salons a true prince or princess dream, isn’t it?

2) Discover Caccuri: THE VILLA COMUNALE

Villa Comunale is right at the foot of Caccuri Castle and today houses the Town Hall. In addition to its historical importance, which would make the visit worthwhile, it is surrounded by a park of pine trees and rocks, exuding a very welcome touch of nature on any trip.

Still in Vila Communale, you can visit the three main gates of the Village: Porta Grande, or Porta Piazza Umberto I, Porta Piccola, and Porta Nuova.

3) Discover Caccuri: THE ABBEY OF S. MARIA DEL SOCCORSO

For those who prefer religious tourism, Caccuri, as a good medieval village, also offers options.

The Abbey of S. Maria del Soccorso, or della Riforma, is a complex dating from the 6th century, founded by the friar Andrea da Gimigliano. The construction took place at the request of the University of Caccuri to honor Madonna del Soccorso.

At the Abbey, you will find works of unimaginable cultural value, such as the statue of Saint Dominic, the Madonna del Rosario canvas and the chapel of the Dukes Cavalcanti.

Chapel of the Congregation of the Most Holy Rosary

Also in the complex, be sure to visit the Chapel of the Congregation of the Holy Rosary, a true artistic and cultural gem of Caccuri, built in 1679 and which houses truly masterful decorations.

5) Meet Caccuri: JOIN THE EVENTS

There’s nothing better about getting to know another culture than participating in its festivities, right? Even more so if your destination is Calabria, which places great importance on traditions.

To take advantage of this aspect of Caccuri, choose to travel in August, because that is when two important events take place:

  • Medieval Festival of Caccuri: the whole city is dressed in medieval costumes and cultural events take place such as historic theaters, medieval music, themed bars and gastronomic and wine delights. See also: Wine road in Calabria.
