3) Pizzo

A charming town full of natural beauty, Pizzo Calabro is located in the province of Vibo Valentia, opposite the island of Stromboli. The name derives from the Pizzu dialect, meaning tip, which refers to its position overlooking the sea. Today it is a small and characteristic old village of medieval origin that maintains the typical appearance of a small seaside town; small streets that open into small patios, balconies facing the sea, beaches and cliffs.

Pizzo Calabro is not only history but also the city of tartufo nero gelato, the typical specialty of the city! A great stop after a tiring motorcycle trip through Calabria, isn’t it?

4) Tropea

Ah, the lovely Tropea! The pearl of Calabria and voted the most beautiful village in Italy!

Tropea, an important center of Calabria, is mainly known for its exuberant landscape and its wonderful waters. The upper part of the city was built on a rock, overlooking the sea, creating a suggestive setting. According to surveys, Tropea has been inhabited since the Neolithic era. Evidence showed that the city was very important in two consecutive periods: first under Norman rule and then in the 19th century, when it was used as a strategic point for the ships of Gioacchino Muràt, who planned to conquer Sicily.

A small town full of traditions that explores the growing tourist development and where there is so much to be explored. Check out some tips on what to do in Tropea:

5) Fiumefreddo

Fiumefreddo is about 100km away from Tropea, but it is definitely worth the trip! In 2017, in a contest promoted by the famous Kilimangiaro Touristic program, it placed 7th among the most beautiful villages in all of Italy.

Come with me in a tour in Fiumefreddo!

You could see that this small town is typically medieval, made up of narrow streets and picturesque squares, with a watchtower that still stands. Another special feature is the scent of traditional and healthy Calabrian and Mediterranean dishes that come from the windows of the kitchens, which are often on the ground floor, overlooking the narrow streets of this wonderful village.

It is precisely because of its narrow streets and its landscapes that you can admire and feel the sensation of being in one of those places where time seems to have stopped, not only time, but also the mind, which is still in this place of peace and traditional flavors.

6) Shrine of Saint Francis of Paola

A journey of just over 20 minutes takes us from Fiumefreddo to the Shrine of St Francis of Paola.

Paola is the most important center on the Tyrrhenian coast of Calabria, both because it surrounds the monastery of St Francis and because of its connection with the railway and highway to Cosenza. The beauty of the sea, the landscapes of the mountains that surround it, the Shrine and St Francis that protects it from the top, as well as the hospitality of its people, make the city of Paola one of the best interesting tourist destinations on the entire Tyrrhenian coast.

You can take the way of St Francis of Paola, visit the Shrine, as well as the complex of the Abbey of Badia-Luta and the ruins of the Norman-Suebi Castle.

7) Morano

Our next stop is the small village of Morano Calabro, also considered one of the most beautiful places in all of Calabria. Located on a hill 694 meters above the sea, it is one of the most fascinating centers in the Pollino National Park.

There are many reasons that lead us to Morano Calabro, such as the art, culture, history and charm of this citadel on the slopes of Mount Pollino, where it’s easy to find a little refreshment on the hottest days, or winter snow for a romantic walk through the narrow streets of the village.

A unique experience is being in this fantastic place at the foot of the hill on which are the ruins of a former convent from the 1600s, which allows you to enjoy hiking with the feeling of immersion in a wild and untouched nature, archeology, good food, excellent hospitality and cordiality on the part of those in Morano. The proximity of the town of Morano Calabro to other characteristic cities of Pollino complete the beauty of the visit.

8) Civita

In the heart of Pollino National Park, we find Civita, “the country (village) among the rocks”, defined as a function of the huge green mountains that surround the valley, immersed in an unparalleled natural environment, one of the most beautiful valleys in Pollino

It is a place that is still little chosen by most tourists, which contributes to the preservation of its territory and the authenticity of the visit. Civita rests between a typically Mediterranean plant landscape on one side and an exciting landscape characterized by the Raganello Canyon on the other, which is the gateway to the Pollino National Park.

Due to its geographical position and the morphology of its territory, it has a unique beauty. The reserves of green paths and crystal-clear waters that flow from the Raganello stream, where there are wonderful canyons, archaeological sites where you can hear distant echoes of a diverse culture, which has seen one another several times over the centuries, Greek, Roman, Byzantine , Saracens and finally Albanians.
